Golf Carts

Residents have asked why “golf carts” are not allowed inside the Harbour.  There is a difference between the “golf cart” you might see on a golf course or in other vacation communities and a “Low Speed Vehicle” (LSV).  Our Covenants say that Dare County and NC State laws apply to the operation of vehicles.  The Dare County ordinance regarding “golf carts” does not include Colington Harbour as one of the areas where private “golf carts” are allowed. Therefore, any “golf cart” in Colington Harbour must be a “street legal” LSV.  This means it must be registered with a VIN#, insured, capable of a speed over 20 mph, and the operator must have a driver’s license.

Any changes to the current policy regarding “golf carts” in Colington Harbour would require a revision of the Colington Harbour Covenants (which must be approved by a majority of 67% of the 2400 property owners) followed by a petition to Dare County to include Colington Harbour in the list of areas which permit “golf carts” to be driven on the streets.

(Note:  The use of quotation marks in this article around “golf carts” is to distinguish it from Low Speed Vehicle.)
